Book Review: Anti-Diet by Harrison
I just finished reading Anti-Diet by Christy Harrison. LOVED IT. The book begins with an overview of how "diet culture" has infiltrated our way of life for hundreds of years as a result of famines, wars, medical theories, and beliefs about women. Harrison clearly documents (with many a scientific study) how "diets" as we know them DON'T WORK, and in fact do more harm than good.
Finally, she offers a guide to "Intuitive Eating" as the anti-diet. Making peace with food and our bodies, integrating our self-worth and body image. So many who suffer from PTSD experience dissociation, which can disconnect you from your own body. Some of us even transfer the hatred we feel towards our perpetrators to loathing of our own bodies. Intuitive eating and learning to honor ALL BODIES, just as they are, are bold steps to heal dissociation. I felt so validated; I've been fighting my body for so long.
